Job Creation for People with Disabilities

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

Lelt Foundation has expanded assistance to another community in Ethiopia! Continuing our mission of focusing on advanced education programming and employment opportunities, we’ve partnered with Salu Ethiopia, an organization that assists people with disabilities through job creation programs and technical literacy training.

Meet Guade Yibeltal. He is 50 years old, married and has three children. Guade suffers from Polio. Having a disability in Ethiopia is an incredible hardship, as there aren't ample public services and accommodations for handicapped communities. As a result, Guade couldn’t find work to support his family. He spent entire days walking through the Merkato, the largest open-air market in sub-Saharan Africa, collecting plastics for recycling, as his only means of income. This was grueling work because Guade has a great deal of difficulty walking, and he rarely earned enough income to properly feed his family. In 2021, he began vocational training at Salu’s Training and Development Center to learn the skill of carpet weaving. Six months later, Salu employed him full-time as an artisan carpet weaver. Guade credits Salu’s job creation program for changing his life, and in turn, creating opportunities for his entire family.
