Birtukan is 16 years old and in 7th grade and Ammanuel School in Karakore, Ethiopia. Her favorite subject is math, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

Birtukan's mother, Birke, grew up in a small town with no school, so she never received an education. She traveled to Addis Ababa to work after her parents passed away and met Million. They married and had 2 daughters – Birtukan and Sifan. When Sifan was 2, Million left the family, and Birke has been struggling to raise her daughters since. With no education or job skills, Birke is in crisis. If her daughter, Birtukan, is sponsored for $35/month, she will receive daily meals, after school tutoring, and basic medical care. If her family is sponsored for an additional $15 a month, they will all receive monthly food rations and medical care, and her mother will be given priority to enroll in our Family Business Program, where she will be empowered to start her own small business and earn an income.
